Microsoft Windows Longhorn Loves RSS!
On Friday, June 24, 2005, Microsoft announced that the next version of the Windows operating system, codenamed Windows Longhorn, loves RSS (Really Simple Syndication). At Gnomedex 5.0 in Seattle,.Dean Hachamovitch, Product Unit Manager for Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) team, made the announcement that there will be deep platform support for RSS built into Windows Longhorn. Hachamovitch says the RSS functionality in Longhorn will make it easy for users to discover, view and subscribe to RSS feeds and for developers to incorporate rich capabilities of RSS into applications. Users will be able to easily discover RSS feeds as they surf the web, with an illuminated icon allowing users to find and read the feed directly in IE. Users will also be able to subscribe to an RSS feed as easily as adding a favorite. Web application developers will be able to easily build RSS support into their web applications with the new RSS features. Hachamovitch and Amar Gandhi, Group Program Manager for the Longhorn RSS platform, demonstrated how Web application developers can integrate with the Windows Longhorn platform's RSS features. Hachamovitch said, "Simple List Extensions will enable websites to publish lists such as photo albums, music playlists and Top 10 lists as RSS feeds. RSS can be used to publish lists like these today, but our extensions really enhance the experience that users can have when subscribing to these kinds of lists. We’re very excited about the great scenarios that these extensions can enable."
In a break from past Microsoft policies on proprietary extensions, Microsoft has made the Simple List Extensions specification available for use under the Creative Commons license, the same license under which the RSS 2.0 specification was released.
