Microsoft Enters Voice Over IP (VoIP) Internet Telephone Market
If you work for a telphone company, you should probably be nervous. On August 31st, 2005, Microsoft rocked the telecom industry by announcing plans to develop an Internet telephone service that would allow calls from computers to regular phones, cell phones, and other computers. A few years ago, I worked for Bell Laboratories, both when it was owned by AT&T and later Lucent Technologies. It's no secret that VoIP scared them. They went from regarding other telecom companies as their primary competitor to considering Cisco their primary competitor. Voice over IP (VoIP) sends phone calls over the Internet rather than phone lines. The cost savings is tremendous, both for companies and individuals. With Microsoft entering the market, AT&T, Lucent, and other telecom companies must be even more nervous now. Microsoft just acquired Teleo, a small San Francisco firm that makes Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, and announced that they intend to integrate the technology into their systems and develop services that will allow consumers to make calls from their desktop by the end of 2005.
