SEO Expert Analyzes Google Patent
What Does the Google Patent Mean for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?Jill Whalen, a well-known Search Engine Optimization (SEO) expert, has an excellent article over on Robin Good's blog. Whalen discusses what she thinks Google's patent indicates about how Google ranks websites. As discussed previously in our Internet Marketing News Section, Google filed a patent on their search engine technology. Google's patent is potentially very revealing about how they rank sites. But you have to be able to read between the lines to try to figure out how Google might use some of the search engine capabilities discussed in their patent. Whalen has some interesting insights into how she thinks Google might use these capabilities. A couple points in her analysis of Google's patent really caught my attention: 1. Google may be using traffic data from sites when determining how to rank them. Whalen speculates that Google could use aggregate data they have been compiling from the millions of users of the Google toolbar. 2. Google may also base search engine rank on clickthrough rates on search results pages. Not only can Google track clickthrough rates, Whalen speculates they can also track whether users are satisfied with certain results by by tracking and analyzing whether they come back to a search engine results page and click on other search engine results. There's much more to Jill Whalen's analysis of Google's patent. But just the two points above really got my attention!
