Amazon.com Now Selling Groceries Online
And you thought they only sold books... Internet retailer Amazon.com has just started selling groceries on their website. Amazon is limiting the new product line to nonperishable goods such as cereal, pasta and canned soup. The bold move by the Internet retailer was quietly introduced as a beta test on the Amazon.com website on May 25. Amazon will apparently evaluate the business before promoting it widely. "We try and offer our customers one-destination shopping where they can find everything they need, and groceries are something our customers have been asking for," Amazon spokeswoman Tracy Ogden said. "As with any of our stores, we are always looking to increase our selection." Previous retailers venturing into online grocery sales have had a tough time. During the dot-com boom of the late 1990s, investors poured a fortune into online grocery stores such as Webvan. Webvan once planned to spend $1 billion on a warehouse network but went bankrupt when the dot-com bubble burst in 2001. Amazon.com, however, has an impressive record of success. The Internet retail giant may just be able to conquer the grocery market, especially with discount prices and free shipping. Read moreat ZDNet: Amazon starts selling groceries online...
